India is advancing a major enhancement to its naval strike capabilities by planning to equip its upcoming Project-77 nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs) with the extended-range BrahMos-ER missile. The submarine-launched version of the missile will have a strike range of up to 800 kilometers while maintaining its supersonic speed of Mach 3, and will be deployed using Vertical Launch Systems (VLS). Defense experts state that combining the supersonic BrahMos-ER with long-range subsonic cruise missiles on these new submarines will provide the Indian Navy with significant flexibility in future naval warfare.
