Poland opposes accelerated Ukraine EU accession
Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has stated that Poland will not allow the accelerated admission of Ukraine into the European Union. This position directly contradicts Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's recent argument that Ukraine's rapid accession would strengthen the bloc. The statement highlights a significant diplomatic obstacle for Kyiv's EU ambitions, which it has pursued as a strategic goal since Russia's full-scale invasion.
Zelensky elaborated in an interview that EU membership is a higher priority than NATO accession, citing U.S. opposition and greater economic and security benefits.
The message adds Zelensky's specific argument that Ukraine's army and technologies would strengthen the EU, and provides Sikorski's direct quote opposing the accelerated accession.
The statement was made by Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, adding a specific high-level source to the previously reported Polish opposition.
